Symptom

  • Command 'create index' or update statistics
  • Fails with error 9840 state 10, which is also reported in the errorlog:

    Error: 9840, Severity: 20, State: 10
    Internal hash based statistics collection error on column (<table name>). Contact sybase technical support for help.
