3203095 - Error: ""An instance already exists with that number and a different name for SAPSID"

Symptom

During installation of a Primary Application Server (PAS) on host that was used for other instances, the following error occurs:

"An instance already exists with that number and a different name for SAPSID <SID>/D00"

The error occurs even if the previous application server was already uninstalled.
