3204981 - Error - "Users have started this online item. You cannot remove the online settings."

When attempting to update/change the Online Settings for an Item the following error is generated.

Users have started this online item. You cannot remove the online settings

1. Open the Online Content tab for the Item you wish to change
2. Attempt to delete or add new content. Save.
3. Error is generated.

The reason why this warning is displayed is that there has been an attempt to update or add content to an existing Item. Prior to changing the content the Item has already been assigned to user(s) who have started but not completed the Item. 

As per KBA 2316207, “If an Item with online content has been assigned to users, and the content objects need to be updated or the online content section needs to be updated (by adding a new content object, attempting to replace/edit an already added content object is not supported), it is recommended to revise the item or create new item prior to adding or updating the content so that the integrity of the prior content can be retained.”

It would therefore be recommended that you either revise or create a new Item when making changes to the content.
