3205641 - Many spids in MAINTENANCE TOKEN after Audit Process hits error 1204 - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • In an ASE system with auditing enabled and 'suspend audit when device full' is on (which is DEFAULT setting)
  • User logins hang
  • Many processes show MAINTENANCE TOKEN in cmd column in sp_who / sysprocesses output 
  • The Audit Process hit error 1204 'out of locks':

    Error: 1204, Severity: 17, State: 1
    ASE has run out of LOCKS.
    Re-run your command when there are fewer active users, or contact a user with System Administrator (SA) role to reconfigure ASE with more LOCKS.

  • The ASE errorlog may show an message that shows there was an Audit Process Exception
