3215415 - Upgrade ASE via saphostctrl failed due to "You do not have write permissions to the chosen installation destination."

Symptom

  • Upgrade to ASE16 SP04 PL02 via saphostcrtl failed: 

/usr/sap/hostctrl/exe # ./saphostctrl  -function LiveDatabaseUpdate -dbname <SID> -dbtype syb -updatemethod Execute -updateoption TASK=UPDATE_ASE -updateoption DROP_LOCATION="/soft/ase16sp04pl02"
Error: Command execution failed. : Installation failed with rc=255. Please check /sybase/<SID>/sapdbctrl-config/sybInst.83997.out. (fault code: 127)

  • Checking /sybase/<SID>/sapdbctrl-config/sybInst.83997.out can see following:

        You do not have write permissions to the chosen installation destination.
        Please choose a different location for installation

  • Running 'ls -al' to check the installation directory (/sybase/<SID>), it shows the owner is syb<SID> which is correct.
