3246538 - Error "Number range ** is not an external range" shows up when manually assigning a serial number to the product in a production order

Symptom

You want to use serial number for a product, however, when you manually assign it in a production order, the error message "Number range ** is not an external range" (Message no. IS041) shows up.

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Reproducing the Issue

1. Open app Create Production Order.
2. Enter quantity and scheduling information then click "Enter".
3. Go to the serial number page via "Menu -> Header -> Serial Numbers".
4. Manually enter a serial number for the product then click "Enter".
5. The error message shows up.

Cause

"**" is the number range assigned to the current equipment category and it is not external.

Resolution

Please set the number range as "external" in SSCUI 103091 - Define Number Ranges for Equipment Categories.
