Symptom
The following error message appears when entering a product in a service order or service order template:

No item category could be determined

Reproducing the Issue
- Open a service order or service order template in the appropriate app (e.g., Manage Service Orders).
- Enter a product or material in one of the line items.
- The system issues an error indicating that no item category could be determined for the selected product.
Cause
The issue occurs because the General Item Category Group is not maintained correctly for the selected product. This field is required for the system to determine the correct item category during service order processing.
Resolution
- Open the Change Material app.
- Ensure that the user has the business role SAP_BR_PRODMASTER_SPECIALIST (Master Data Specialist – Product Data).
- In the Material field, enter the relevant product or material and press Enter or choose Continue.
- In the Select View(s) dialog, select the following views and confirm:
- Basic Data 1
- Sales: Sales Org Data 2
- On the Basic Data 1 tab:
- Set the correct value for the General Item Category Group, for example: SRVP (Service Product).
- On the Sales: Sales Org Data 2 tab:
- Ensure the same value (SRVP) is maintained in the General Item Category Group field.
Maintaining the correct item category group ensures that the system can successfully derive the item category during service order creation.
