3286177 - "Unable to update the background data. Please try again later." when you change multiple cells in a story in SAP Analytics Cloud for Planning (SAC)

The following behavior occurs in SAP Analytics Cloud for Planning (SAC) when you change the second cell in a story:

• Error: Unable to update the background data. Please try again later.
• If you show the Reason for unplannable data from the table option, the message is 
  • Missing Dimension Information
    Data can not be changed because the planning area information for the following dimensions is not available.
    Drill down further to enter data.
    <dimension names> 
• The optimized planning area is enabled for this model.
• Some dimensions are enabled with the dimension-based data access control with the Hide Parents option set to off.

SAP Analytics Cloud, all versions

1. Open a story.
2. Enter or change the value for a cell. It works.
3. Enter or change the value for another cell or the same cell.
4. Error "Unable to update the background data. Please try again later." is received.

This is as designed.

Data entry on cells that belong to members that have some members underneath in the hierarchy that the user is not allowed to write to (due to dimension-based dimension data access control) is not generally supported to automatically update only the allowed members.

The recommended solution is to drill down to certain member(s) for the dimensions mentioned in the reason for unplannable data. This will then make the cells editable.  

If working with more specific cells (e.g. by setting explicit filters to writeable members or putting the DAC dimensions on the table axis) does not work for your use case, an alternative might be to use other means to control access to the dimension that supports this, like dimension-based data access control with the hide-parents option, or data locking. Please refer to the KBA 2996671, which is concerned with the same problem with different symptoms (which you might run into for your use case, if you deactivated the optimized planning area option for your model).

Other than that, you could also submit a request to enhance the data entry feature wrt. data access control as per KBA 2424376.
