When migrated the custom query Controlling report from the design studio to the new technology WebDynpro.
After the migration, there is no button pause.

Cause
It is by design.
Resolution
There is an option "Defer Layout Update" in the Navigation Panel upper right corner (the gears icon right of "Dimensions"), which is doing the same as the Pause button.
