Symptom

  • How to grant permission on a built-in function.
  • How to capture output of asehostname without using elevated permission of sa_role or 'manage server permission'?
  • Permission denied on builtin, returning error 10386.
    asehostname is used as an example, the content applies to all builtins that require elevated permission.
    select asehostname()
    go
    Msg 10386, Level 14, State 1:
    SELECT BUILTIN permission denied on builtin asehostname, owner system administrator.
