Symptom
- The hierarchy selected for one dimension in Builder will be reset by selection of hierarchy variable based on Live BW connection in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)
- If you don't choose value for the hierarchy variable as it is optional, the dimension will be reset to flat presentation.
Environment
- SAP Analytics Cloud, Enterprise Edition
- SAP Analytics Cloud, Embedded Edition for S/4HANA Cloud
- Live Data connection to SAP BW or SAP S/4HANA
Reproducing the Issue
- Log on to SAC tenant.
- Create one story with Table based on BW query with Hierarchy Variable via Live Data connection to SAP BW or SAP S/4HANA.
- In Set Variable Dialog, select one value for the Hierarchy Variable.
- Add the same dimension into Rows of the table.
=> The dimension will show the hierarchy according to selection in Set Variable dialog. - Click Hierarchy from context menu of the dimension in Builder.
- Change the hierarchy to another one, which is different from the selection of Hierarchy Variable.
=> The dimension will show the new hierarchy in the table. - Try to change the Prompt of either story or table.
- In Set Variable dialog, for the hierarchy variable, keep the original selection in step 3, or change to another hierarchy different from the selection in step 5 .
- Click Set.
=> The hierarchy selected for the dimension in step 5 will be reset and the dimension will always show the hierarchy selected for the hierarchy variable.
=> If you don't choose any value for the hierarchy variable as it is optional, the dimension will be reset to flat presentation.
=> Same behavior could be observed when reopening the story.
Cause
- This is by-design.
- The selected value for hierarchy variable in Set Variable dialog will be always respected, even different hierarchy may be selected statically for same dimension in Builder.
- Similar behavior could be also reproduced when executing same BW query through RSRT or other BW clients.
Resolution
Reconsider the design of either story or BW query:
- If you want to enable end users to select the hierarchy dynamically, please use Hierarchy Variable.
- If you want to keep static hierarchy for all users, please remove Hierarchy Variable from the BW query and then set Hierarchy in Story Builder.
