3322231 - SUM phase DETERMINE-ENGINE-RELEASE: null object returned from com.sap.sdt.tools.var.VariableHandlerIF.getVariable in

Symptom

You are trying to generate system info xml file for java system, referring to SAP KBA "2293050 - SUM: Generating a System Information XML File for use with SAP Maintenance Planner".

SUM fails in phase DETERMINE-ENGINE-RELEASE. Following error can be found in SUM log file "DETERMINE-ENGINE-RELEASE_<xx>.0.LOG".

<time stamp> [Error ]: The following problem has occurred during step execution: java.lang.NullPointerException: while trying to invoke the method com.sap.sdt.tools.var.VariableIF.getValue() of a null object returned from com.sap.sdt.tools.var.VariableHandlerIF.getVariable(java.lang.String).

Checking the log information above the error message, you can see the AS Java release is actually detected. In this example, it is release 740.
