3346610 - Custom Fields: Editing only allowed in source system

When attempting to edit an existing custom field (for example: add a new district code to the custom field's value list), and then save it, a pop-up window displays the error messages:

• Custom Field <FieldName> could not be retrieved.

Or:

When you save a custom field or data source extension in the Custom Fields app, a pop-up window displays one of the following error messages:

• Custom field &1: Editing only allowed in source system &2.
• Extension &1: Editing only allowed in source system &2.

Or:

In the backend, use t-code SCFD_LOG to see the Custom Fields: Log Viewer. Observe that there is an error:

• Custom Field     UI Service     OData call failed      <FieldName> 

And when double click on it, the Exception Stack section shows:
