3347879 - Import Data Tool - "Harmful content detected on the file [filename]"

Symptom

When attempting to import a file with the Import Data tool, the system states:

  • Harmful content detected on the file [filename]

Environment

SAP SuccessFactors Learning

Cause

The cause could be a few reasons including html enabled file contents with scripting (javascript) or external links being set in the Excel file which are seen as harmful.

How to tell if content includes scripting:

  1. Open the file in any html viewer or browser
  2. Inspect and look to see if any script tags are present

How to tell if external links are in the file:

  1. Rename the .xlsx file to .zip
  2. Open up the zip file and access the "xl" folder
  3. The "externalLinks" folder will be present

Resolution

To avoid possible issues with the file first remove any scripting tags then:

  1. Download the file from Import Data tool again
  2. Replace the information from the harmful file into the newly download file
  3. Import again

Note: It is outside the scope of SAP Support to inform what is wrong with the file if a new file from the system is not blocked.  See similar KBA 3343940
