3349747 - Different kind of roles within Time and Attendance

Symptom

Prior to version 16.3, each user within Time and Attendance could have only one General Role.  Each level of user security and variation of system features required a different General Role. In version 16.3 and later, it becomes possible to group several subroles into a single role. This functionality is called stackable roles.

Legacy Roles

If a user had multiple responsibilities within their organization, often that user would need separate logins with different roles assigned to accommodate having dual roles.  As an example, separate General Role policies would be required to distinguish a general employee and manager employee.

Typical Legacy General Roles might have included:

  • Employee_General
  • Employee_Webclock_General
  • Employee_Webclock_Mobile_General
  • Manager_General
  • Manager_Analytics_General
  • ACT_Manager_General

Stacking Roles - Introduced in version 16.3

With Stackable Roles, each user can be assigned multiple General Roles or Sub-Roles.  The combination of Sub-Roles assigned creates the users Role within the Time and Attendance application.  Using this method, an individual can use one login to access all of their role features.

Role policies are still used to configure Stacking Roles, however each has a far more limited set of system features.  The combination of Sub-Roles assigned create a System Role similar to the Legacy General Roles.
