3363441 - Does ASE write to an errorlog synchronously or asynchronously? - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • Operating systems frequently include a flag in the open() system call to allow a process to request that writes to a file be performed synchronously(sync) or asynchronously (async).
  • It also depends on the file system mount option 'sync' or 'async'. The option 'sync' means, all writes to the file system are immediately flushed to disk. The process issues the write waits for the write to complete. In contrast, with 'async' the system buffers the write operations. The process continues to run instead of been blocked.
