  • When opening .csv reports where source data is different of English language, non-alphabetic characters appear.

  • SAP Build Work Zone, Advanced Edition
  • SAP SuccessFactors Work Zone

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to a workspace where you would like to extract report.
  2. Click on export.
  3. Open .csv file and non-alphabetic characters will be in place of regular words.

It is a Microsoft Office Excel system behave.

By default Excel opens the CSV file with ANSI encoding. The ability to open the CSV file with UTF-8 encoding and non English characters was introduced in Excel 2016.

Workaround suggested:

Importing CSV file into Excel

  •  Open a blank excel sheet
  • Go to Data tab.
  • Click Get Data Icon, it will expand.
  • Hover mouse on the first option "From File" and select "From Text/CSV"
  • Choose the downloaded report.
  • Click on Load at the bottom screen.

Try Libre Office or a different editor and follow the workaround below:

  • Open the CSV file using Notepad.
  • Click "File > Save As".
  • In the dialog window that appears - select "ANSI" from the "Encoding" field. Then click "Save".
  • Open this new CSV file using Excel - your non-English characters should be displayed properly.
