3377502 - Error "An instance of agent service is already running. Return code: 1056" when starting the Data Provisioning Agent

Symptom

When trying to start the DPAgent via Windows Service, the following errors occur:

Agent service daemon location: C:\usr\sap\dataprovagent\bin\DPAgentServiceDaemon.exe
Starting agent service. Command: sc start SAP_HANA_SDI_Agent_Service_Daemon_DPAgent
Start Service return code: 1056
An instance of agent service is already running. Return code: 1056
Cannot connect to agent. Trying again after 3 seconds
Cannot connect to agent. Trying again after 3 seconds
Cannot connect to agent. Trying again after 3 seconds
Cannot connect to agent. Trying again after 3 seconds
Cannot connect to agent. Trying again after 3 seconds
Reached a maximum wait time of 18 seconds for the service to start
