Symptom

Upgrade using Software Update Manager (SUM) stops in phase PREP_EXTRACT/SCAN_DOWNLOADDIR: 

Scanning the download directory failed with the following error:
Got 1 error(s) during extraction/listing of archives, see phase log for details

Log name: /usr/sap/SUM/abap/log/CAR.<NUMBER>

EXECUTING /usr/sap/SUM/abap/bin/SAPCAR -tvf /SUM-DOWNLOADS-DIRECTORY/<PACKAGE_NAME>.SAR
format error in header
SAPup> Process with PID <PID-NUMBER> terminated with status 12 at <TIMESTAMP>!
