3387087 - Japanese half-width Katakana characters are not convereted - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • For example, ASE default character set is eucjis as below.

1> sp_helpsort
2> go

Sort Order Description

 ------------------------------------------------------------------
 Character Set = 140, eucjis
     Extended Unix Code for JIS-X0201 and JIS-X0208.
     Class 2 Character Set
 Sort Order = 50, bin_eucjis
     Binary sort order for Japanese using the EUC JIS character set
      (eucjis).
(return status = 0)

  • When you connect to the ASE with sjis (Shift-JIS) as a client charset and retrieve half-width (Hankaku) Katakana characters from a table, you get question marks "?" with a warning message as below instead of actual characters.

WARNING!  Some character(s) could not be converted into client's character set. Unconverted bytes were changed to question marks ('?').
