3387870 - Would like to find a way for a process to know when a shutdown has been initialized. - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • Trying to find a way to test inside a stored procedure when a server has been shut down, but is still in the process of shutting down. (awaiting processes to finish)
  • In the ASE errorlog it is seen as:
Shutdown started by user '<username>'. SQL text: shutdown
  • However, when a server is prevented from shutting down while processes are in progress, it may take some time.
  • Messages are seen by new logins as:
A SHUTDOWN command is already in progress. Please log off.
  • When a process is in a continuous loop, the shutdown does not finish gracefully.
    • The live processes either needs to be killed manually -
    • Or the server has to be shutdown with the "shutdown with nowait" option.
  • Would like to terminate a process cleanly inside the stored procedure when a shutdown is detected.
