Symptom

While working with a document which is to be sent via e-mail, the document was submitted and the output status displayed an error, with the following message in the details:

"No delivery to Email ID: XYZ, as recipient unknown" (where XYZ represents the e-mail address to which the document is to be sent)

Environment

SAP Business ByDesign

Reproducing the Issue

This scenario can happen for any document which contains an output document. In the below example, a Purchase Order will be used.

  1. Go to Purchase Requests and Orders work center.
  2. Enter the Purchase Orders view.
  3. Search for the purchase order and select it.
  4. Click on the Edit button.
  5. Navigate to the Output History tab.
The error status can be seen for an output entry.

Cause

In AWS, specifically within the context of Amazon SES or any other email service providers for that matter of fact, an email address might be placed on a suppression list for several reasons:

  • Bounce Rate: If emails sent to a particular address repeatedly bounce (due to a non-existent email address, mailbox full, etc.), the address may be added to a suppression list to prevent further attempts to send emails to it. This helps maintain sender reputation and reduces the likelihood of being flagged as a spammer.
  • Complaints: If recipients mark emails as spam or complain about receiving unsolicited emails, their email addresses can be added to a suppression list. This protects sender reputation and ensures compliance with anti-spam regulations.
  • Hard Bounces: Emails that consistently bounce due to permanent errors (for example, domain does not exist) are typically added to a suppression list automatically to prevent further attempts to send to those addresses.

Suppression lists are crucial for maintaining email deliverability and sender reputation. They help ensure that emails are only sent to recipients who are likely to engage with them and who have explicitly opted in to receive communications. This practice not only improves deliverability rates but also reduces the risk of being flagged as a spammer, which can have serious consequences for email senders.

Resolution

Open a case with SAP Support informing about the error message "No delivery to Email ID: XYZ, as recipient unknown" and the email IDs of the recipients who are not receiving the emails properly.

The receivers email IDs need to be removed from the suppression list by our infrastructure (operations) team.
