Execution plan is a graphical representation of a query broken into individual steps. Each step is one operation that builds upon operations completed before it. Read them from right to left and from top to bottom. The step in the upper left corner represents the completed query. Keep in mind that the SQL server parallelizes some parts of the query; the separation into individual steps helps you analyze the query in its graphical representation, even if the process isn't sequential on the server side.
