3413306 - Tomcat service abruptly stops

Symptom

  • Lately, it has been noticed that in certain environments, Tomcat server seems crashes every few days like 1-2 weeks.
  • In these cases, Tomcat service shows as stopped in the CCM
  • When Tomcat crashes this way, the users can be getting "Bad Gateway" message.
  • After restarting the tomcat, it runs for a few days and again crashes
  • In all these cases, a tomcat dump is generated after the crash (eg: hs_err_pid1234.txt), with the following details:

    # A fatal error has been detected by the SAP Java Virtual Machine:
    #
    #  EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x000000000a9b28cf, pid=1436, tid=5044
    # faulting address (tried to read): 0x00000000000001d0
    #
    # JRE version:  (8.0.25) (build )
    # Java VM: SAP Java Server VM (8.1.073 10.0.2+000, Mar 24 2021 16:00:01 - 81_REL - optU - windows amd64 - 6 - bas2:326464 (mixed mode), tiered, compressed oops, parallel gc, windows-amd64)
    # Problematic frame:
    # J4 2166 c2 java.util.LinkedHashMap.get(Ljava/lang/Object;)Ljava/lang/Object; (33 bytes) [0x000000000a9b2880+0x000000000000004f] (sp=0x000000003da5ac90,pc=0x000000000a9b28cf)

  • In most cases, Tomcat memory arguments are configured optimally. Parameters like maxmetasize 1+ GB and max heap have already been increased from 4 to 8 or 16g.
  • There are no out of memory or heap space or stack overflow errors, nor anything indicative of load like running out of threads.
