3413729 - Excel error "We found a problem with some content in '<filename>.xls'" occurs when saving ALV as 'EXCEL Files (*.xls) through Local file (Ctrl+Shift+ F9)

When exporting an ALV through Local file (Ctrl+Shift+ F9) > text with tabs > Filename > Save as type: as 'EXCEL Files (*.xls) users are able to download the excel file but the following error message appears when opening it:

"We found a problem with some content in '<filename>.xls'. Do you want us to try to recover as much as we can? If you trust the source of this workbook, click yes".

The same pop-up can also appear for spreadsheet export. In this case, further context is needed to understand the root cause. In some cases, additional error messages appear such as "Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content" which indicates this is the issue detailed in KBA 2616421.
