3415769 - Error: "Query Panel couldn’t load. Install 64bit (x64) Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime and try again", when creating a report based on a Universe (UNX) in Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Unable to create a report based on a Universe (UNX)
  • Query Panel window blank after selecting a Universe in Crystal Reports.
  • When creating a report based on a Universe (UNX), Crystal Reports fails with the error:
      
    "Query Panel couldn’t load. Install 64bit (x64) Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime and try again."

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2020 - Support Pack 04
        
  • MS Windows Server 2016
  • MS Windows Server 2019
  • MS Windows Server 2022

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports 2020 - SP04, create a new report.
  2. In the Database Expert, under "New Connection", double click on "Universe (UNX)"
  3. Login to the SAP BusinessObjects BI server.
  4. Select the Universe (UNX) to report from.
  5. It then fails with the error:
       
    "Query Panel couldn’t load. Install 64bit (x64) Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime and try again"

Cause

  • Support for Universe (UNX) was added in Support Pack 04 of Crystal Reports 2020.
  • The 64bit Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is required for the Query Panel, which is included in MS Windows 10, and 11,
    but it is missing in MS Windows 2016, 2019, and 2022

Resolution

  • To resolve the issue, install the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime:
       
    1. If Crystal Reports 2020 is running, close the application.
          
    2. Go to the Microsoft Edge WebView2 download page on the Microsoft website at:

      https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2?form=MA13LH#download-section

    3. In the section "Download the WebView2 Runtime", under "Evergreen Bootsrapper", click on "Download"
        
    4. Click on "Accept and Download"
        
    5. It will automatically start the installation. If not, double click on the downloaded file: MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup
        
    6. Once installed, start Crystal Reports 2020, and you will now be able to create a report based on the semantic layer: Universe(unx)
