3432620 - Error: "Item XX: Project ABC is a customer project" when linking a Contract Item to a Project Task

Symptom

Error: "Item XX: Project ABC is a customer project" (Where XX stands for the line item and ABC the Project ID), when searching for a Project Task.

Environment

SAP Business ByDesign

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to Sales Orders work center
  2. Select Contracts view
  3. Show: All Contracts
  4. Search for Contract ID 123 (Where 123 refers to the Contract ID)
  5. Click in Edit and Go to Items tab
  6. Click in Add Row and add a Product ID which is type project based
  7. Under Cost and Revenue Assignment, click in the value help and search for Project Task ABC

The following error message appears:

Error: Item XX: Project ABC is a customer project

Cause

Right next to Project Task there is a (?) sign, if you hover over the mouse, the following message appears:

"You can assign the item to a project task in a multi-customer project or a direct cost project to enable costs and revenues for services and expenses to be posted to the project. A multi-customer project is recommended. You cannot assign the item to a customer project or overhead cost project."

Hence, since Project ID ABC is a customer project the system throws the error message as the project must be a multi-customer project.

Resolution

This is the current system behaviour.
