3434315 - Sporadic CALL_FUNCTION_OPEN_ERROR dumps when connecting to the local instance

Symptom

The issue starts happening without a clear indication of why, and the issue goes away after some time (varying between a few and several minutes).

Different symptoms are observed while the issue is happening:

  • CALL_FUNCTION_OPEN_ERROR dumps are raised for connections being opened to the instance itself (e.g., destination "NONE").
     
  • At SM50, it can be observed that work processes stay "on hold" with reason "RFC" for several seconds.
    When double clicking on the work process, the "Wait Info" field shows "CMINIT".
     
  • The RFC Gateway trace file (dev_rd) shows entries similar to the following:

  • At the transaction SMGW (initial screen), connections to the destination "NONE" stay on "connection pending" state for a long time.
     
  • A level 2 trace of the RFC Gateway reveals that the connection attempt is being made using an incorrect IP address.

    NiHLGetNodeAddr: get addr for hostname '[SAP hostname]' (mode=0)
    NiHLGetNodeAddr: found hostname '[SAP hostname]' in cache (valid-address/name)
    NiIGetNodeAddr: hostname '[SAP hostname]' = addr [wrong IP address]
    R3INIT: generated Partner-Host-Addr: [wrong IP address]
