Symptom
There is a business requirement to extend Billing document numbering with prefixes, as Alphanumeric and Special Character like "/" while generating Billing Document.
For this reason, it is required to expand Billing Document Number field length from 10 up to 15 characters.
Environment
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition all versions
Resolution
In order to alter Billing Document Numbering, SAP delivers the option of "Flexible Billing Document Numbering". However, there are some restrictions/rules that user must paid attention.
- Any prefixes defined must conform to the following format:
- Alphanumeric characters only (A-Z, 0-9, no special characters)
- Maximum length of five characters
- The last character must be a letter (for example, 1A or 1234B)
- You cannot assign P, S, PBD and TMP as prefixes because they are reserved for system use
- About length:
-
- The technical maximum length of a billing document number is 10 characters. When a prefix is used, this reduces the length of the possible number range by the length of the prefix. For example, a standard billing document number could be 1234567890. If the number range prefix ABC applied, the format would change to something resembling ABC1234567. This leaves only 7 characters for the purely numeric part of the document number, which is dictated solely by the number range interval.
