3486102 - Long running INSERT can't be killed and ASE server can't SHUTDOWN - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • One INSERT task started 2 days ago and has not finished yet.
  • ASE server can't be SHUTDOWN due to active process (The INSERT task).
  • The INSERT task can't be killed even with force option as it is in latch sleep:
    1> kill 17 with force
    2> go
    A SHUTDOWN command is already in progress. Please log off.
    Msg 6125, Level 16, State 1:
    Server 'SID', Line 2:
    You cannot kill spid '17' with force option as it is waiting on the latch held by spid '594'.
  • The latch holder (in this case spid 594) has already gone:
    1> kill 594 with force
    2> go
    A SHUTDOWN command is already in progress. Please log off.
    Msg 6106, Level 16, State 1:
    Server 'SID', Line 1:
    Process '594' is not an active process number.
