3489675 - Understanding the Position Extension Object in Job Profile Builder

Symptom

  • What is the Position Extension object?
  • How do I create a position extension?
  • How can I confirm if the Position Extension was created?

Image/data in this KBA is from SAP internal systems, sample data, or demo systems. Any resemblance to real data is purely coincidental

Environment

  • SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central
  • SAP SuccessFactors Job Profile Builder
  • SAP SuccessFactors Succession Planning

Resolution

The position extension is only relevant to companies using Employee Central (EC) or the Succession Planning (SCP) Metadata Framework (MDF) Position-Based Nomination method.

What is the Position Extension?

The position extension (PositionExtension) is an internal identifier within Job Profile Builder (JPB) which is created when a job classification already mapped to a position is mapped to a role. This object is automatically created by the system and cannot be created or managed through Manage Data or imports. If a job classification (not mapped to a position) is mapped to a role, the position extension will not be created.

How do I create a Position Extension?

A position extension is automatically created by the system and cannot be manually created. In order for the system to create a position extension, a job classification must be mapped to a position, and then the job classification must be mapped to a role. To ensure a position extension is created, the configuration process has been documented below into 2 parts. Part I is specific to Employee Central or Succession Planning, and Part II is specific to Job Profile Builder.

Part I: Job Classification and Position

This part walks through creating a job classification and position, then mapping them together. The steps on how to complete this process will be different based on the module you're using:

Employee Central

  1. Create a job classification using Managing Mass Changes in Employee Central - Importing Foundation Data
  2. Create a position using Implementing Position Management - Creating New Positions and populate the job classification in the Select Job Code field

Succession Planning (MDF Position-Based Nomination Method ONLY)

  1. Create a job classification using Implementing and Managing Succession - Enabling the Job Classification Object
  2. Create a position using Implementing and Managing Succession - Importing Position Data for the MDF Position-Based Nomination Method and populate the job classification in the Select Job Code field

Part II: Family and Role

This part walks through creating a family and role, mapping the family to the role, and mapping the job classification to the role. There are multiple paths to complete this process based on your preferred method:

Path 1: SuccessStore

  1. Create a family and role using Implementing and Managing Job Profile Builder - Adding Job Families and Roles from SuccessStore
  2. Map the job classification to the role using either of the following options:

Path 2: Manage Job Profile Content

  1. Create a family using Implementing and Managing Job Profile Builder - Adding Job Families Without SuccessStore
  2. Create a role, and map it to a family and job classification using Implementing and Managing Job Profile Builder - Creating Job Roles Without SuccessStore

Path 3: Imports

  1. Create a family using Implementing and Managing Job Profile Builder - Importing New Job Profile Content Using Manage Job Profile Content Import/Export for the Family Type
  2. Create a role and map it to a family using Implementing and Managing Job Profile Builder - Importing New Job Profile Content Using Manage Job Profile Content Import/Export for the Role Type
  3. Map the job classification to the role using Implementing and Managing Job Profile Builder - Importing New Job Profile Content Using Manage Job Profile Content Import/Export for the Role-Job Codes Type

How can I confirm if the Position Extension was created?

You can locate the position extension using Import and Export Data and Manage Job Profile Content.

Import and Export Data

  1. Follow the steps in Implementing the Metadata Framework (MDF) - Exporting Object Definitions for the Position Extension object definition.
  2. In the downloaded zip file from the job, open Position Extension.csv
  3. Review column C (Position.Code) for the relevant job classification. If the column is blank, the position extension was not created:

Manage Data

  1. Navigate to Admin Center > Manage Job Profile Content
  2. In the Select Content Type... dropdown, select Set Up Families and Roles
  3. Select the Roles tab
  4. Select the role
  5. Select the # Mapped Job Codes tab and view the # Positions column:
