3498799 - Network Measurement Tool Bandwidth Lower Than Expected in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)

Symptom

Environment

  • SAP Analytics Cloud 2024.15.1

Reproducing the Issue

Cause

The Network Measurement Tool in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) may show lower bandwidth results compared to other speed test tools due to several factors:

  1. Specific endpoint: The SAC tool measures speed to SAC backend servers, while general speed tests often use closer, optimal servers.
  2. Network path: The route between the client and SAC servers may involve multiple hops and sub-optimal routing, especially over long distances.
  3. Cloud infrastructure: SAC's hosting on cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) can introduce additional network complexities.
  4. Data center location: Physical distance between the client and SAC data center impacts speeds.
  5. Network conditions: Congestion and overall network quality affect bandwidth.
  6. Client-side factors: Corporate firewalls, proxies, or security measures may impact SAC connections differently than general internet traffic.

The SAC Network Measurement Tool provides the most relevant metric for actual SAC performance. Differences of 50% or more between SAC measurements and general speed tests can be expected in some cases. These variations are normal and reflect real-world network conditions.

It's important to note that SAP does not throttle or limit connection speeds in any way. The differences observed are solely due to the network and infrastructure factors mentioned above.

Resolution

As the bandwidth differences are primarily due to network and infrastructure factors outside of SAP's control, resolving these issues typically requires involvement from the customer's Internet Service Provider (ISP) and internal IT team. Here are steps customers can take:

  1. Engage with ISP:
    • Contact your ISP to discuss the specific route between your location and the SAC data center.
    • Request an analysis of the network path to identify any bottlenecks or routing issues.
    • Inquire about potential upgrades or optimizations to improve connection quality.
  2. Internal network assessment:
    • Work with your IT department to analyze internal network configuration.
    • Check for any bandwidth limitations, firewall rules, or proxy settings that might impact SAC bandwidth.
    • Ensure Quality of Service (QoS) settings are not prioritizing other traffic over SAC.
  3. Conduct comprehensive tests:
    • Perform multiple tests at different times of day to account for network traffic variations.
    • Compare results from different user locations within your organization.

Remember, while SAP cannot directly address external network issues, we are committed to helping you achieve optimal performance. If you've completed these steps and continue to experience significant performance issues, please contact SAP support with your findings for potential assistance.
