3499274 - Error 834 during database upgrade on recovery - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • Upgrading ASE from an old version to a new version, i.e. SP03 PL11 to SP04 PL04
  • Logins were trying to access the database while the upgrade was taking place
  • An 834 error is reported when the upgrade process completes
    Error: 834, Severity: 20, State: 4
    Illegal attempt to clean buffer
