3503559 - How to utilize styling options when using custom theme in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)?

The following behavior occurs in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC):

• You have created custom theme in your optimized story and defined default font color for this theme under formatting menu.
• The defined font color could pose visibility issues when it does not contrast well with the background color (e.g. grey on grey).
• In the default SAC theme, the "Value Label" color automatically adjusts based on the background color of the chart/bar. However this behavior does not apply anymore after defining a default font color for the custom theme.

SAP Analytics Cloud Version 2024.8.20

1. Log on to SAC.
2. Open optimized story.
3. Go to Format on toolbar->Select theme.
4. Apply default light theme to your charts.
5. Notice that the data label font colors are either light or dark colored on same bar chart, depending on the bar color.
6. Go to Theme menu again and apply custom theme where you defined a font color for data label.
7. Apply theme and notice that the data label colors are forced now and you cannot revert back to the behavior where they adjust to the color of the bar.

• This is by design behavior.
• Once you set a static font color for an element in the theme, there is not an easy way to unset it currently.

• Create a new theme without overriding or specifying the data-label element color for Charts - this way, the Charts will not have a static color that overrides the auto contrast behavior. Then for Charts that do not need the auto contrast, the Styling Panel can be used to set the static data label color, while all of the others do not have an override and can continue to use auto contrast.
• Or if you prefer to keep working with the current theme, then instead leverage the Data Label Background Color feature to specify a background color / transparency for the Charts that require it.
