Within the SAP Commerce Cloud in the Public Cloud environment, when there is a need to override certain out-of-the-box files, it is recommended to utilize ANT buildcallbacks, as detailed in KBA 3059085 - How to replace out-of-the-box files during build with Commerce Cloud in the Public Cloud and Replacing OOTB Files. The sample provided in the documentation illustrates the procedure for replacing an entire file. However, when out-of-the-box files are replaced in this manner, the customized files must be ensured that are compatible with the current Commerce release version, especially during upgrades. Issues may arise, for instance, if modifications are based on an older version of Commerce and do not incorporate changes from newer versions. Specifically, if the custom files in question include *-items.xml files, the build may fail if new types introduced in recent patches are missing.
