3528199 - Unable to create new variant articles in t-code MM42 after adding further characteristic values

Symptom

After adding further characteristic values of a generic article, it's no longer possible to create new variants using t-code MM42 within the same execution. Warning message MH183 "No new variants can be defined" occurs and variant matrix is called in display mode.
