3547445 - Negative Stock Values in Material Inventory Balance Summary Report Due to Backdated Consumption Entries

Symptom

The Material Inventory Balance Summary Report reflects negative stock values for a specific period despite negative stock being disallowed. This occurs when backdated consumption entries are recorded with dates preceding the corresponding stock receipt.

Environment

SAP Business ByDesign

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to the Inventory Valuation Work Center.
  2. Open the Reports view and select the Material Inventories - Balance Summary report.
  3. Filter for the product category and fiscal year.
  4. Observe negative stock values in one month and positive values in the next, even though negative stock is not allowed for the location.

Cause

The issue occurs because consumption entries are recorded with a backdated posting date, preceding the receipt of stock. This results in negative stock values being reflected in the Material Inventory Balance Summary Report for the earlier period.

Resolution

This is standard system behavior.

Backdated transactions adjust current stock levels while posting valuation differences on the specified date. Therefore, restrict backdated postings to authorized personnel to minimize errors. This would maintain accurate reporting and alignment between stock adjustments and their financial impact.
