3553531 - Profit Overview by Key Figure Not Show Profit For Invoices

Symptom

When trying to analyze the profit for invoices by using Profit Overview by Key Figure report, the data is incorrect.

Environment

SAP Business ByDesign

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to Cost and Revenue work center.
  2. Go to List view.
  3. Select report Profit Overview by Key Figure.
  4. Run the report with the relevant selection for the company.
  5. However, the report value is not as expected (e.g: null).

Cause

If checking Profit Type, the selection is: 3 - Earned Profit.

The report derives its data from actual accounting data based on functional areas, in accordance with the Income Statement.

However, customer invoices are not posted to expense accounts. The profit margin calculation would therefore not take any costs into account.
This profit type can be used to check for profit margins per, for example, product category, product and or sales units.

Important here is that there have been postings to revenues as well as postings to cost of sales for the respective attribute. The data makes sense, for example, for product category.

Resolution

If need to analyze the profit for invoices, use profit type 2 - Invoice profit.

However, when using this profit type, the report derives its values from CRM data, as maintained in the customer invoices pricing tab based on the maintained price components. Again, the report can only calculate a profit margin for an invoice/invoice item if the respective price components are used for the item/invoice, such as List Price, Cost and Discount or Surcharge.

The results are only of statistical nature, useful for profit planning. However, as they are not based on actual accounting data, there might be differences with data in the income statement.
