3553985 - Only profit and loss accounts are allowed for Intercompany clearing accounts

Symptom

Only Profit and Loss Accounts are allowed for selection when setting "Assign Intercompany Clearing Accounts for Actual Postings" in Automatic Account Determination activity.

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to activity "Automatic Account Determination"
  2. Select Area: Controlling, Subarea: Cost Center Accounting and Process: Assign Intercompany Clearing Accounts for Actual Postings;
  3. Only profit and loss acocunt are allowed.

Cause

This is the standard way to define clearing accounts for universal allocation.

Resolution

Alternatively, it is possible to define balance sheet accounts as clearing accounts. This is configured in the same Automatic Account Determination activity, but using the following area and parameter details:

Area: Financial Accounting

Subarea: General Ledger Accounting

Process: Prepare Intercompany Transactions

Transaction Key: BUV (Clearing between company codes)

Clearing accounts for all possible combinations of the company codes involved should be defined.

Be aware that defining balance sheet accounts as clearing accounts is only a shortcut for tax groups and is not recommended. If you do this then you have to post the taxes yourself. The recommendation is to map a clearing account and an allocation account together so that intercompany postings are posted to the same node in your financial statement version and won’t impact your financial statement.

Note: Only profit and loss clearing accounts are processed by the subsequent intercompany billing process. Balance sheet clearing accounts are not considered in the billing process.
