Symptom
- Error: 'RFC_START_SAPGUI_FAILURE Communication with SAPGUI timed out'
- When opening, or saving a report to the SAP BW System from Crystal Reports, it fails.
- When attempting to create a report based on an SAP BW Query using the SAP menu in Crystal Reports, it fails with the error:
"SAP Logon Control
RFC_START_SAPGUI_FAILURE
Communication with SAPGUI timed out"

Reproducing the Issue
- In Crystal Reports, under the SAP menu, select "Create New Report from a Query"
- Select the SAP BW system to connect to.
- It then fails with the error: "RFC_START_SAPGUI_FAILURE Communication with SAPGUI timed out"
Cause
- SAP GUI registry option: StartSapLogon, set to zero (0), or it is missing due to installation issue of the SAP GUI.
Resolution
- Set the SAP GUI registry key: StartSapLogon, to the value: 1

- Start the Microsoft Registry Editor ( regedit )
- Navigate to the SAP GUI registry path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\SAP\SAPGUI
- If the key: StartSapLogon, does not exist, create a DWORD registry, with the name: StartSapLogon
- Set the registry key StartSapLogon, to the value: 1
- Start the Microsoft Registry Editor ( regedit )
