3574214 - Error: 'RFC_START_SAPGUI_FAILURE sapgui start failed' when attempting to create a report based on SAP BW Query in Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Error: 'RFC_START_SAPGUI_FAILURE sapgui start failed'
  • When attempting to create a report based on an SAP BW Query using the SAP menu in Crystal Reports, it fails with the error: 
       
         "SAP Logon Control
          RFC_START_SAPGUI_FAILURE
          sapgui start failed.”

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports, under the SAP menu, select "Create New Report from a Query"
  2. Select the SAP BW system to connect to.
  3. It then fails with the error: 'RFC_START_SAPGUI_FAILURE sapgui start failed'

Cause

  • Crystal Reports fails because when using the SAP menu, it uses the SAP GUI, but the SAP GUI Security Settings is set to Disabled.

Resolution

  • In the SAP GUI, set the Security Settings to: Allow, to allow external application to start the SAP GUI:
      
    1. Start the SAP Logon
    2. In the upper left corner of the SAP Logon window, click on the 3 lines, and select: "Options..."
    3. In the "SAP GUI Options", in the left pane, expand "Security", and select "Security Configuration"
    4. In "Security", under "Status", click on "Open Security Configuration"
    5. In "Security Configuration", set the Default Action to: Allow
    6. Click "OK"
    7. Back on the previous screen, notice the Default Action is now set to: Allow
    8. Click "OK"
    9. Back to the SAP Logon window, click "OK"
