3579821 - Difference between Viewer and BI Content Viewer roles in SAP Analytics Cloud

• A query was raised regarding the difference between the Viewer role (under Planning Standard license) and the BI Content Viewer role (under Business Intelligence license) in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC).
• Upon verification, both roles exhibit the same characteristics:
  • Able to view planning models
  • Able to edit values in private versions
  • Unable to publish the data to the public version
  • Unable to run the data actions

The difference between the Viewer and BI Content Viewer roles lies in the planning functionalities that can be utilized. The Viewer role allows the use of planning functionalities such as Distribute Values, Data Locking, Validation Rules. These functionalities are not available with the BI Content Viewer role.

The observed behavior is as per the system design. The differences between the Viewer and BI Content Viewer roles are as follows:

• Both roles have read-only permissions and cannot edit the model or the fact data. The only exception is the private version. Both roles can create private versions, enter data on booked cells of the private versions, .... Please see Features by License Type for Planning Models.
• The Viewer role (under Planning Standard license) allows the use of planning functionalities, such as Distribute Values, Data Locking, Validation Rules.
• The BI Content Viewer role (under Business Intelligence license) does not allow the use of planning functionalities.
