Symptom
- Error: This document could not be opened.
- Unable to open reports formatted using the Paint Brush in Crystal Reports.
- Able to open the same report in a lower version of Crystal Reports.
- After saving a report on which fields were formatted using the Format Painter, and attempting to re-open it in Crystal Reports, it fails with the error:
"<Report File Name.rpt>
This document could not be opened."
Environment
- SAP Crystal Reports 2020
Reproducing the Issue
- In Crystal Reports, create a new report, or open an existing report.
- Format one, or multiple fields using the Format Painter.
- Save and close the report.
- When attempting to open the report in Crystal Reports, it fails with the error:
"This document could not be opened"
Cause
- Product defect when using Format Painter in Crystal Reports 2020.
- Issue tracked under SAP Note 3548171
Resolution
- The issue is resolved in the following product update:
- Crystal Reports 2020 - Support Pack 04 - Patch 11
- Crystal Reports 2020 - Support Pack 04 - Patch 11
- IMPORTANT NOTE:
Even after applying Support Pack 04 - Patch 11, reports that were formatted using Format Painter in Crystal Reports 2020 - Support Pack 04 - Patch 10 and below, will still generate an error when attempting to open those reports.
To be able to open those reports, you either need to:
- Open the report in an older version of Crystal Reports, like Crystal Reports 2016, then save the report; or
- Find a backup copy of the report, on which the Format Painter was not used to format fields.
