3581908 - Error "Peer certificate rejected by ChainVerifier.Exception" encountered when opening ESR or IB objects after enabling HTTPS communication

Symptom

After enabling HTTPS communication in the SAP Process Integration/Orchestration system, the following error occurs when opening Enterprise Service Repository (ESR) or Integration Builder (IB) objects:

Connection to system REPOSITORY using application REPOSITORY lost. 
Detailed information: Sending request to https://host:port/rep/containeraccess/int?container=any and receiving response ... FAILED! 
Message is: Unable to open SSL connection to host "host:port". 
Peer certificate rejected by ChainVerifier.Exception.

This prevents ESR or IB objects from being accessed via HTTPS.
