Symptom
- You are planning a configurable material by reorder point planning. A purchase requisition is generated based on the reorder and safety stock after the MRP run.
- The "Configuration" button is not present in purchase requisition and you cannot make the configuration for the material.
- However, if the purchase requisition is created manually in the MM app such as Create Purchase Requisition, the "Configuration" button is there.
Environment
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
Cause
This is standard system behavior.
Since the PR is generated based on the reorder point planning, there is no requirement where the material is configured. As a result, MRP can only create purchase requisitions without configuration assignment.
In the meantime, the "Origin of Configuration" for the MRP generating purchase requisition is "External configuration", which means it does not result from an MM-process/transaction, but has to point to an object.
The combination of the above 2 points leads to the effect, that there is no configuration button available in the purchase requisition.
Resolution
Scenarios for configurable materials usually work in a way, that you use a make-to-order setup. That is, planned orders and purchase requisitions are created for dedicated requirements like sales orders for example. In that case, MRP creates receipt elements, that are referencing the corresponding configurations.
If you would like to use make-to-stock scenarios, you have to work with material variants. Please refer to Scope Item 21D - Make-to-Stock Production with Variant Configuration for more information.
The standard workflows are also described in Strategies for Configurable Materials page.
