3611633 - Is it possible to restore data after an Instance Refresh?

Symptom

  • After a refresh, you noticed that need to refer back the target to previous version.
  • Can a refresh be reverted/restore post-completion?
  • By default, SuccessFactors keeps up to 30 days worth of backups of customer data, why this backup is not applicable after refresh activities?
  • What best practices and alternatives to make sure in case I need to revert a refresh change I could achieve it?

Environment

SAP SuccessFactors HCM

Resolution

Due to the nature of the process, it is not possible to reverse or restore any data/configuration after an Instance Refresh (manual or through the Instance Refresh Tool). This is because the refresh process impacts the tenant schema, so when restoring to the previous version, it will lead to data inconsistencies and broken functionalities.

IMPORTANT NOTES AND ALTERNATIVES:

  • Before submitting the request, please make sure the target system is correct and be mindful that all the current data and configuration will be erased.
  • As alternative to the restore, if the data/configuration is present in another tenant, you can considering using the Configuration Center to transport those to the target system.
  • Also, if there will be major changes in the system, please consider requesting a backup before running the Instance Refresh. The process of backup from KBA 2568976 - SuccessFactors Instance Database Dump or Backup Request - SAP for Me supports the restore after a refresh, so it can be an alternative, but only if it was requested previously.
