3626558 - Default sort order of filter and table/chart is different in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)

Symptom

  • Dimension member sort order is different in the Input Control/Story filter vs the Table/Chart in SAC.
  • Sort of Input Control is alphabetical order in ID, however sort of table is defined in BW query.
  • Note: same behavior in widget filter editor.

Environment

  • SAP Analytics Cloud 2025.8.13
  • SAP BW/4HANA 2023

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Login to SAC.
  2. Create a story based on live data connection to BW.
  3. Insert a chart/table and add a dimension.
  4. Insert a filter (input control or story filter) based on the same dimension => Sort of input control/story filter is alphabetical order in ID, however sort of table is defined in BW query.

Cause

  • By design behavior.
  • On client, each filter and chart/table can have own sort order, so:
    • If the filter in the story is set to ascending, sortDirection in the query will be ascending and the LOV will be sorted ascendingly. Note this setting won't affect any chart or table.
    • If the filter doesn't specify sort, we use sortDirection=None in the query for LOV, and the order is determined by the three rules from the backend team:
      • if there's a selection defined → sort by selection
      • if there's a hierarchy set → sort by hierarchy
      • if there's no selection defined → sort ascending using to first presentation (e.g. DISPLAY_KEY).
    • If the chart/table doesn't specify sort order, the resultset query doesn't contain any Sort section, not even sortDirection=None. And this would returned original sort order defined in BW query, and can be inconsistent with the filter LOV query.

Resolution

  • Workaround: in the filter go to Sort - Add Customer Order  =>  the proposed default customer order is exactly same as sort of the table / chart. Apply.
