3629033 - Error: 'Sorry, we couldn't find <File Path\<File Name>.xlsx...' when opening a file generated by exporting a Table to Excel in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)

Symptom

  • Error opening some excel spreadsheet in MS Excel.
  • Issue started occurring after upgrading to the latest version of MS Office.
  • When exporting Table to Excel (XLSX) from SAP Analytics Cloud, and opening the file in MS Excel, it fails with the error:

    "Sorry, we couldn’t find  <File Path\<File Name>.xlsx. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?"

Environment

  • SAP Analytics Cloud 2025.8.13
  • MS Excel 365

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In SAP Analytics Cloud, created a Model and saved it with a name containing square brackets, like: [Model Name]
  2. Created a Story with a Table based on the Model containing square brackets.
  3. Exported the Table to XLSX.
  4. When double clicking on the generated XLSX file, it starts MS Excel, and displays the error:

      "Sorry, we couldn’t find <File Path\<File Name>.xlsx. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?"

Cause

  • When exporting a Table to MS Excel (XLSX) it uses the Table name for the file name.
  • By default the Table name is the name of the Model it is using, and if the Model name is using square brackets, the file name generated when exporting to MS Excel will contain square brackets.
  • The error is caused by the latest update of MS Excel, that no longer accept square brackets in the file name.

Resolution

Workarounds:

  • Open the generated MS Excel spreadsheet that contains square brackets using the File menu in MS Excel; or
  • Before opening the MS Excel spreadsheet containing square brackets, rename the generated file name, and remove the square brackets; or
  • In SAP Analytics Cloud, when exporting a Table to MS Excel, before exporting it, rename the proposed file name, and remove the square brackets; or
  • In SAP Analytics Cloud, manually rename each Table with a Title that does not contain square brackets. ( Recommendation, since the end users will not have to perform extra steps after exporting the Table to MS Excel )
