Symptom
The following behavior occurs in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC):
- Variable does not filter data in the story.
- Data is not filtered after setting a variable in the model.
Environment
SAP Analytics Cloud
Reproducing the Issue
- Login to SAC;
- Open a model;
- Set a variable (e.g. year);
- Save the model;
- Create a story based on the model;
- A pop-up window appears for applying variable;
- Create a table/chart;
- Notice the variable you set in the model does not filter the data.
Cause
This is behavior by design.
Resolution
- Variables are intended for use within formulas and calculations rather than for filtering purposes. The "Defining Variables" section is part of the "Formulas and Calculations" chapter in the Help Guide.
- In the Modeler, variables act as placeholders that are assigned default values. Within stories, users can then select or adjust these variable values, enabling formulas to dynamically operate with different numeric inputs or datasets
