3632124 - What is the Difference Between Duration and Start/End Time Recordings?

Symptom

You are using time recordings in Business ByDesign, and need to understand the difference between times that have a Duration and times which have a Quantity or a Start and End Time.

When recording a time with Start and End time, the duration is not automatically populated. Similarly, when recording a time with duration, the Start and End Time are not automatically filled.

Environment

SAP Business ByDesign

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to the Time Administration work center.
  2. Enter the Employees view.
  3. Search for the employee and select it.
  4. Click on the Edit button.
  5. Navigate to the Employee Times tab.
  6. Add a new row for time recording.
  7. Fill the Start / End Time fields.

Here, it is possible to see that the Duration field is not automatically calculated.

Resolution

Duration-based time recordings are meant to be used in times related to transaction documents (for example, the service execution for a Sales Order) for accounting purposes.

Times with Start/End times are meant to represent the "base" time that the employee is on their working shift, and are not relevant for document accounting.

Business ByDesign separates these 2 types of quantity to cover scenarios where the employee may book a single time recording to cover the office shift (for example, from 09:00 to 18:00) while considering only a certain amount of these hours for the accounting of a service execution. In cases where both Duration and Start/End times are filled, the Quantity will display the Duration value, since it is the relevant information for accounting purposes.
